23Then the entire council took Jesus to Pilate, the Roman governor.G2532G537G4128G846G450G71G846G1909G40912They began to state their case: "This man has been leading our people astray by telling them not to pay their taxes to the Roman government and by claiming he is the Messiah, a king."G1161G756G2723G846G3004G2147G5126G1294G1484G2532G2967G1325G5411G2541G3004G1438G1511G5547G9353So Pilate asked him, "Are you the king of the Jews?" Jesus replied, "You have said it."G1161G4091G1905G846G3004G1488G4771G935G2453G1161G611G846G5346G4771G30044Pilate turned to the leading priests and to the crowd and said, "I find nothing wrong with this man!"G1161G2036G4091G4314G749G2532G3793G2147G3762G158G1722G5129G4445Then they became insistent. "But he is causing riots by his teaching wherever he goes—all over Judea, from Galilee to Jerusalem!"G1161G2001G3004G3754G383G2992G1321G2596G3650G2449G756G575G1056G2193G56026"Oh, is he a Galilean?" Pilate asked.G1161G4091G191G1056G1905G1487G444G2076G10577When they said that he was, Pilate sent him to Herod Antipas, because Galilee was under Herod's jurisdiction, and Herod happened to be in Jerusalem at the time.G2532G1921G3754G2076G1537G2264G1849G375G846G4314G2264G5607G846G2532G5607G1722G2414G1722G5025G22508Herod was delighted at the opportunity to see Jesus, because he had heard about him and had been hoping for a long time to see him perform a miracle.G1161G2264G1492G2424G3029G5463G1063G2258G2309G1492G846G1537G2425G1223G191G4183G4012G846G2532G1679G1492G5100G4592G1096G5259G8469He asked Jesus question after question, but Jesus refused to answer.G1161G1905G846G1722G2425G3056G1161G846G611G846G376210Meanwhile, the leading priests and the teachers of religious law stood there shouting their accusations.G1161G749G2532G1122G2476G2159G2723G84611Then Herod and his soldiers began mocking and ridiculing Jesus. Finally, they put a royal robe on him and sent him back to Pilate.G1161G2264G4862G846G4753G1848G846G1848G2532G1702G4016G846G2986G2066G375G846G375G409112(Herod and Pilate, who had been enemies before, became friends that day)G1161G3739G1722G846G2250G4091G2532G2264G1096G5384G3326G5037G240G1063G4391G5607G1722G2189G4314G143813Then Pilate called together the leading priests and other religious leaders, along with the people,G1161G4091G4779G749G2532G758G2532G299214and he announced his verdict. "You brought this man to me, accusing him of leading a revolt. I have examined him thoroughly on this point in your presence and find him innocent.G2036G4314G846G4374G5129G444G3427G5613G654G2992G2532G2400G1473G350G1799G5216G2147G3762G158G1722G5126G444G3739G2596G2723G84615Herod came to the same conclusion and sent him back to us. Nothing this man has done calls for the death penalty.G235G3761G2264G1063G375G5209G4314G846G2532G2400G3762G514G2288G2076G4238G84616So I will have him flogged, and then I will release him."G3811G3767G3811G846G63017cG1161G318G2192G630G1520G846G2596G185918Then a mighty roar rose from the crowd, and with one voice they shouted, "Kill him, and release Barabbas to us!"G1161G349G3826G3004G142G5126G1161G630G2254G91219(Barabbas was in prison for taking part in an insurrection in Jerusalem against the government, and for murder.)G3748G2258G1223G5100G4714G1096G1722G4172G2532G5408G906G1519G543820Pilate argued with them, because he wanted to release Jesus.G4091G3767G2309G630G2424G4377G3825G437721But they kept shouting, "Crucify him! Crucify him!"G1161G2019G3004G4717G4717G84622For the third time he demanded, "Why? What crime has he committed? I have found no reason to sentence him to death. So I will have him flogged, and then I will release him."G1161G2036G4314G846G5154G1063G5101G2556G4160G3778G4160G2147G3762G158G2288G1722G846G3811G3767G3811G846G63023But the mob shouted louder and louder, demanding that Jesus be crucified, and their voices prevailed.G1161G1945G3173G5456G154G846G4717G2532G5456G846G2532G749G272924So Pilate sentenced Jesus to die as they demanded.G1161G4091G1948G1096G846G15525As they had requested, he released Barabbas, the man in prison for insurrection and murder. But he turned Jesus over to them to do as they wished.G1161G630G846G1223G4714G2532G5408G906G1519G5438G3739G154G1161G3860G2424G846G230726As they led Jesus away, a man named Simon, who was from Cyrenec, happened to be coming in from the countryside. The soldiers seized him and put the cross on him and made him carry it behind Jesus.G2532G5613G520G846G520G1949G5100G4613G2956G2064G575G68G2007G846G2007G4716G5342G3693G242427A large crowd trailed behind, including many grief-stricken women.G1161G190G846G4183G4128G2992G2532G1135G3739G2532G2875G2532G2354G84628But Jesus turned and said to them, "Daughters of Jerusalem, don't weep for me, but weep for yourselves and for your children.G1161G2424G4762G4314G846G2036G2364G2419G2799G3361G1909G1691G4133G2799G1909G1438G2532G1909G5216G504329For the days are coming when they will say, 'Fortunate indeed are the women who are childless, the wombs that have not borne a child and the breasts that have never nursed.'G3754G2400G2250G2064G1722G3739G2046G3107G4723G2532G2836G3739G3756G1080G2532G3149G3739G3756G233730People will beg the mountains, 'Fall on us,' and plead with the hills, 'Bury us.'cG5119G756G3004G3735G4098G1909G2248G2532G1015G2572G224831For if these things are done when the tree is green, what will happen when it is dry?c"G3754G1487G4160G5023G1722G5200G3586G5101G1096G1722G358432Two others, both criminals, were led out to be executed with him.G1161G2532G1417G2087G2557G71G4862G846G33733When they came to a place called The Skullc, they nailed him to the cross. And the criminals were also crucified—one on his right and one on his left.G2532G3753G565G1909G5117G3588G2564G2898G1563G4717G846G2532G2557G3739G3303G1537G1188G1161G3739G1537G71034Jesus said, "Father, forgive them, for they don't know what they are doing."c And the soldiers gambled for his clothes by throwing dice.G1161G3004G2424G3962G863G846G1063G1492G3756G5101G4160G1161G1266G846G2440G906G281935The crowd watched and the leaders scoffed. "He saved others," they said, "let him save himself if he is really God's Messiah, the Chosen One."G2532G2992G2476G2334G1161G758G2532G4862G846G1592G3004G4982G243G4982G1438G1487G3778G2076G5547G1588G231636The soldiers mocked him, too, by offering him a drink of sour wine.G1161G4757G2532G1702G846G4334G2532G4374G846G369037They called out to him, "If you are the King of the Jews, save yourself!"G2532G3004G1487G4771G1488G935G2453G4982G457238A sign was fastened to the cross above him with these words: "This is the King of the Jews."G1161G1923G2532G2258G1125G1909G846G1121G1673G2532G4513G2532G1444G3778G2076G935G245339One of the criminals hanging beside him scoffed, "So you're the Messiah, are you? Prove it by saving yourself—and us, too, while you're at it!"G1161G1520G2557G2910G987G846G3004G1487G4771G1488G5547G4982G4572G2532G224840But the other criminal protested, "Don't you fear God even when you have been sentenced to die?G1161G2087G611G2008G846G3004G5399G3761G4771G5399G2316G3754G1488G1722G846G291741We deserve to die for our crimes, but this man hasn't done anything wrong."G2532G2249G3303G1346G1063G618G514G3739G4238G1161G3778G4238G3762G82442Then he said, "Jesus, remember me when you come into your Kingdom."G2532G3004G2424G2962G3415G3450G3752G2064G1722G4675G93243And Jesus replied, "I assure you, today you will be with me in paradise."G2532G2424G2036G846G281G3004G4671G4594G2071G3326G1700G1722G385744By this time it was noon, and darkness fell across the whole land until three o'clock.G1161G2258G5616G1623G5610G2532G1096G4655G1909G3650G1093G2193G1766G561045The light from the sun was gone. And suddenly, the curtain in the sanctuary of the Temple was torn down the middle.G2532G2246G4654G2532G2665G3485G4977G331946Then Jesus shouted, "Father, I entrust my spirit into your hands!"c And with those words he breathed his last.G2532G2424G5455G3173G5456G2036G3962G1519G4675G5495G3908G3450G4151G2532G2036G5023G160647When the Roman officerc overseeing the execution saw what had happened, he worshiped God and said, "Surely this man was innocent."G1161G1543G1492G1096G1392G2316G3004G3689G3778G2258G1342G44448And when all the crowd that came to see the crucifixion saw what had happened, they went home in deep sorrowc.G2532G3956G3793G4836G1909G5026G2335G2334G1096G5180G1438G4738G529049But Jesus' friends, including the women who had followed him from Galilee, stood at a distance watching.G1161G3956G846G1110G2532G1135G4870G846G575G1056G2476G3113G3708G502350Now there was a good and righteous man named Joseph. Jesus Is Betrayed and Arrested

18After saying these things, Jesus crossed the Kidron Valley with his disciples and entered a grove of olive trees.G2424G2036G5023G1831G4862G846G3101G4008G5493G2748G3699G2258G2779G1519G3739G846G1525G2532G846G3101 2Judas, the betrayer, knew this place, because Jesus had often gone there with his disciples.G1161G2455G2532G3588G3860G846G1492G5117G3754G2424G4178G4863G1563G3326G846G3101 3The leading priests and Pharisees had given Judas a contingent of Roman soldiers and Temple guards to accompany him. Now with blazing torches, lanterns, and weapons, they arrived at the olive grove.G2455G3767G2983G4686G2532G5257G1537G749G2532G5330G2064G1563G3326G5322G2532G2985G2532G3696 4Jesus fully realized all that was going to happen to him, so he stepped forward to meet them. "Who are you looking for?" he asked.G2424G3767G1492G3956G2064G1909G846G1831G2036G846G5101G2212 5"Jesus the Nazarene,"c they replied. "I AM he," Jesus said. (Judas, who betrayed him, was standing with them.)G611G846G2424G3480G2424G3004G846G1473G1510G1161G2455G2532G3588G3860G846G2476G3326G846 6As Jesus said "I AM he,"c they all drew back and fell to the ground!G5613G3767G2036G846G3754G1473G1510G565G1519G3694G2532G4098G5476 7Once more he asked them, "Who are you looking for?" And again they replied, "Jesus the Nazarene."G3767G1905G846G3825G5101G2212G1161G2036G2424G3480 8"I told you that I AM he," Jesus said. "And since I am the one you want, let these others go."G2424G611G2036G5213G3754G1473G1510G1487G3767G2212G1691G863G5128G5217 9He did this to fulfill his own statement: "I did not lose a single one of those you have given me."cG2443G3056G4137G3739G2036G3754G1537G846G3739G1325G3427G3756G622G3762 10Then Simon Peter drew a sword and slashed off the right ear of Malchus, the high priest's slave.G3767G4613G4074G2192G3162G1670G846G2532G3817G749G1401G2532G609G846G1188G5621G1161G1401G3686G2258G3124 11But Jesus said to Peter, "Put your sword back into its sheath. Shall I not drink from the cup of suffering the Father has given me?"G3767G2036G2424G4074G906G4675G3162G1519G2336G4221G3739G3962G1325G3427G4095G3378G4095G846

Jesus at the High Priest’s House

12So the soldiers, their commanding officer, and the Temple guards arrested Jesus and tied him up.G3767G4686G2532G5506G2532G5257G2453G4815G2424G2532G1210G846 13First they took him to Annas, the father-in-law of Caiaphas, the high priest at that timec.G2532G520G846G520G4314G452G4412G1063G2258G3995G2533G3739G2258G749G1565G1763 14Caiaphas was the one who had told the other Jewish leaders, "It's better that one man should die for the people."G1161G2533G2258G3588G4823G2453G3754G4851G1520G444G622G5228G2992

Peter’s First Denial

15Simon Peter followed Jesus, as did another of the disciples. That other disciple was acquainted with the high priest, so he was allowed to enter the high priest's courtyard with Jesus.G1161G4613G4074G190G2424G2532G243G3101G1161G1565G3101G2258G1110G749G2532G4897G2424G1519G833G749 16Peter had to stay outside the gate. Then the disciple who knew the high priest spoke to the woman watching at the gate, and she let Peter in.G1161G4074G2476G4314G2374G1854G3767G1831G243G3101G3739G2258G1110G749G2532G2036G2377G2532G1521G4074 17The woman asked Peter, "You're not one of that man's disciples, are you?" "No," he said, "I am not."G3767G3004G3814G2377G4074G1488G3361G4771G2532G1537G5127G444G3101G1565G3004G1510G3756 18Because it was cold, the household servants and the guards had made a charcoal fire. They stood around it, warming themselves, and Peter stood with them, warming himself.G1161G1401G2532G5257G2476G4160G439G3754G2258G5592G2532G2328G1161G4074G2258G2476G3326G846G2532G2328

The High Priest Questions Jesus

19Inside, the high priest began asking Jesus about his followers and what he had been teaching them.G749G3767G2065G2424G4012G846G3101G2532G4012G846G1322 20Jesus replied, "Everyone knows what I teach. I have preached regularly in the synagogues and the Temple, where the peoplec gather. I have not spoken in secret.G2424G611G846G1473G2980G3954G2889G1473G3842G1321G1722G4864G2532G1722G2411G3699G2453G3842G4905G2532G1722G2927G2980G3762 21Why are you asking me this question? Ask those who heard me. They know what I said."G5101G1905G3165G1905G191G5101G2980G846G2396G3778G1492G3739G1473G2036 22Then one of the Temple guards standing nearby slapped Jesus across the face. "Is that the way to answer the high priest?" he demanded.G1161G846G2036G5023G2036G1520G5257G3936G1325G4475G2424G1325G4475G2036G611G749G3779 23Jesus replied, "If I said anything wrong, you must prove it. But if I'm speaking the truth, why are you beating me?"G2424G611G846G1487G2980G2560G3140G4012G2556G1161G1487G2573G5101G1194G3165 24Then Annas bound Jesus and sent him to Caiaphas, the high priest.G452G649G846G1210G4314G2533G749

Jesus Sentenced to Death

19Then Pilate had Jesus flogged with a lead-tipped whip.G5119G4091G3767G2983G2424G2532G3146 2The soldiers wove a crown of thorns and put it on his head, and they put a purple robe on him.G2532G4757G4120G4735G1537G173G2007G846G2776G2532G4016G846G4210G2440 3"Hail! And Pilate said, "Look, here is the man!"G3767G1831G2424G1854G5409G4735G174G2532G4210G2440G2532G3004G846G2396G444 6When they saw him, the leading priests and Temple guards began shouting, "Crucify him! Crucify him!" "Take him yourselves and crucify him," Pilate said. "I find him not guilty."G3753G749G3767G2532G5257G1492G846G2905G3004G4717G4717G4091G3004G846G2983G5210G846G2532G4717G1063G1473G2147G3756G156G1722G846 7The Jewish leaders replied, "By our law he ought to die because he called himself the Son of God."G2453G611G846G2249G2192G3551G2532G2596G2257G3551G3784G599G3754G4160G1438G5207G2316 8When Pilate heard this, he was more frightened than ever.G3753G4091G3767G191G5126G3056G5399G3123G5399 9He took Jesus back into the headquartersc again and asked him, "Where are you from?" "Don't you realize that I have the power to release you or crucify you?"G3767G3004G4091G846G2980G3756G1698G1492G3756G3754G2192G1849G4717G4571G2532G2192G1849G630G4571 11Then Jesus said, "You would have no power over me at all unless it were given to you from above. So the one who handed me over to you has the greater sin."G2424G611G2192G3756G1849G3762G2596G1700G1508G2258G1325G4671G509G5124G1223G3860G3165G4671G2192G3187G266 12Then Pilate tried to release him, but the Jewish leaders shouted, "If you release this man, you are no 'friend of Caesar.'c Anyone who declares himself a king is a rebel against Caesar."G1537G5127G4091G2212G630G846G1161G2453G2896G3004G1437G630G5126G630G1488G3756G2541G5384G3956G4160G846G935G483G2541 13When they said this, Pilate brought Jesus out to them again. The Crucifixion

16Then Pilate turned Jesus over to them to be crucified. So they took Jesus away.G5119G3860G846G3767G846G2443G4717G1161G3880G2424G2532G520 17Carrying the cross by himself, he went to the place called Place of the Skullc.G2532G941G846G4716G1831G1519G5117G3004G2898G3739G3004G1447G1115 18There they nailed him to the cross. Two others were crucified with him, one on either side, with Jesus between them.G3699G4717G846G2532G1417G243G3326G846G2532G1782G1782G1161G2424G3319 19And Pilate posted a sign over him that read, "Jesus of Nazarethc, the King of the Jews."G1161G2532G4091G1125G5102G2532G5087G1909G4716G1161G1125G2258G2424G3480G935G2453 20The place where Jesus was crucified was near the city, and the sign was written in Hebrew, Latin, and Greek, so that many people could read it.G5126G5102G3767G314G4183G2453G3754G5117G3699G2424G4717G2258G1451G4172G2532G2258G1125G1447G1676G4515 21Then the leading priests objected and said to Pilate, "Change it from 'The King of the Jews' to 'He said, I am King of the Jews.'"G3767G3004G749G2453G4091G1125G3361G935G2453G235G3754G1565G2036G1510G935G2453 22Pilate replied, "No, what I have written, I have written."G4091G611G3739G1125G1125 23When the soldiers had crucified Jesus, they divided his clothes among the four of them. They also took his robe, but it was seamless, woven in one piece from top to bottom.G3767G4757G3753G4717G2424G2983G846G2440G2532G4160G5064G3313G1538G4757G3313G2532G5509G1161G5509G2258G729G5307G1537G509G1223G3650 24So they said, "Rather than tearing it apart, let's throw dicec for it." This fulfilled the Scripture that says, "They divided my garments among themselves and threw dice for my clothing." So that is what they did.G2036G3767G4314G240G4977G3361G4977G846G235G2975G4012G846G5101G2071G2443G1124G4137G3588G3004G1266G3450G2440G1438G2532G1909G3450G2441G906G2819G5023G3303G3767G4757G4160 25Standing near the cross were Jesus' mother, and his mother's sister, Mary (the wife of Clopas), and Mary Magdalene.G1161G2476G3844G4716G2424G846G3384G2532G846G3384G79G3137G3588G2832G2532G3137G3094 26When Jesus saw his mother standing there beside the disciple he loved, he said to her, "Dear woman, here is your son."G2424G3767G1492G3384G2532G3101G3936G3739G25G3004G846G3384G1135G2400G4675G5207 27And he said to this disciple, "Here is your mother." And from then on this disciple took her into his home.G1534G3004G3101G2400G4675G3384G2532G575G1565G5610G3101G2983G846G1519G2398

The Death of Jesus

28Jesus knew that his mission was now finished, and to fulfill Scripture he said, "I am thirsty."cG3326G5124G2424G1492G3754G3956G5055G2235G5055G2443G1124G5048G3004G1372 29A jar of sour wine was sitting there, so they soaked a sponge in it, put it on a hyssop branch, and held it up to his lips.G3767G2749G4632G3324G3690G1161G4130G4699G3690G2532G4060G5301G4374G846G4750 30When Jesus had tasted it, he said, "It is finished!" Then he bowed his head and released his spirit.G3753G2424G3767G2983G3690G2036G5055G2532G2827G2776G3860G4151 31It was the day of preparation, and the Jewish leaders didn't want the bodies hanging there the next day, which was the Sabbath c. So they asked Pilate to hasten their deaths by ordering that their legs be broken. Then their bodies could be taken down.G2453G3767G1893G2258G2258G3904G3363G4983G3306G3363G3306G1909G4716G1722G4521G1063G1565G4521G2258G3173G2250G2065G4091G2443G846G4628G2608G2532G142 32So the soldiers came and broke the legs of the two men crucified with Jesus.G3767G2064G4757G2532G2608G4628G3303G4413G2532G243G3588G4957G846 33But when they came to Jesus, they saw that he was already dead, so they didn't break his legs.G1161G5613G2064G1909G2424G1492G846G2348G2235G2608G3756G846G4628 34One of the soldiers, however, pierced his side with a spear, and immediately blood and water flowed out.G235G1520G4757G3057G3572G846G4125G2532G2117G1831G129G2532G5204 35(This report is from an eyewitness giving an accurate account. The Burial of Jesus

38Afterward Joseph of Arimathea, who had been a secret disciple of Jesus (because he feared the Jewish leaders), asked Pilate for permission to take down Jesus' body. When Pilate gave permission, Joseph came and took the body away.G1161G3326G5023G2501G575G707G5607G3101G2424G1161G2928G1223G5401G2453G2065G4091G2443G142G4983G2424G2532G4091G2010G2064G3767G2532G142G4983G2424 39With him came Nicodemus, the man who had come to Jesus at night. He brought seventy-five poundsc of perfumed ointment made from myrrh and aloes.G1161G2064G2532G3530G3588G4412G2064G4314G2424G3571G5342G3395G4666G2532G250G5616G1540G3046 40Following Jewish burial custom, they wrapped Jesus' body with the spices in long sheets of linen cloth.G3767G2983G4983G2424G2532G1210G846G3608G3326G759G2531G1485G2453G2076G1779 41The place of crucifixion was near a garden, where there was a new tomb, never used before.G1161G1722G5117G3699G4717G2258G2779G2532G1722G2779G2537G3419G1722G3739G5087G3764G3762G3764G5087 42And so, because it was the day of preparation for the Jewish Passoverc and since the tomb was close at hand, they laid Jesus there.G1563G5087G2424G3767G1223G2453G3904G3754G3419G2258G1451
